In C\u00e1ceres bezoeken we de oude stad, waar de conquistadores na hun &#8220;veroveringen&#8221; in de nieuwe wereld zich rijk geplunderd kwamen vestigen. Na de lunch strekken we onze benen in natuurreservaat Los Barruecos, een waterpartij omgeven door rotsblokken. Hier zijn naar het schijnt enkele Game of Thrones sc\u00e8nes opgenomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Merida checken we in in ons hotel aan het centrale plein, de Plaza Espa\u00f1a. Emerita Augusta was in Romeinse tijden de belangrijkste stad van dit deel van Spanje, en dat is overal te zien, met als absoluut hoogtepunt het theater. Het museum met Romeinse kunst is ook \u00e9\u00e9n van de mooiste, het is terecht het derde vaakst bezochte museum van het land, na het Prado en het Guggenheim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Onderweg naar Trujillo bezoeken we nog het natuurreservaat van Cornalvo, met een Romeinse dam, en opnieuw vele rotsblokken. De droogte heeft hier wel huisgehouden, waardoor de plassen grotendeels droog staan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trujillo is bezette stad. Er vindt immers een Spaans-Portugese top plaats en de oude stad is deels afgesloten. We geraken amper aan ons hotel, en wanneer we de volgende dag de stad bezoeken is het veel omwegen zoeken om de blokkades te omzeilen. Onze stappenteller doet overuren. We zien een mooi kasteel boven de stad, bezoeken de Santa Maria kerk, het geboortehuis van Fransisco Pizarro, de &#8220;veroveraar&#8221; van het Incarijk in Peru, en kuieren voor de rest rond in de oude straatjes, vaak op onze passen teruggestuurd door de Guardia Civil. Op het einde van de dag lukt het ons gelukkig terug in het hotel te geraken.
